Making Watergate Salad is very easy, considering most of the ingredients are readily available, Gluten-free. However, it is advisable to read the ingredient details on the product packs to make sure you avoid allergens and such.

  1. Crushed pineapple in their juice – 1 can or 20 ounce
  2. Jello Instant Pudding (Pistachio flavor) – 1 pack or 3.4 ounce
  3. Marshmallows (JET-PUFFED) – 1 cup
  4. Thawed Whipped Topping (COOL WHIP) – 1 ½ cup


  1. Drain the pineapple juice and separate the pulp
  2. Put the pineapple, pudding mix and marshmallows together
  3. Keep stirring until the pudding dissolves
  4. Start folding in the whipped topping gently
  5. Put it into the freezer and set to chill for at least an hour

The Story Behind The Name

Kraft products take credit for popularising and launching the products that made this recipe a hit. However, they claim that the JELLO Pudding Mix, launched in the 1970s, initially listed the recipe name as Pistachio Pineapple delight. But, after a while, they received many requests for the recipe, and the name that people used was Watergate salad.  The Watergate scandal occurred in the USA during the term of then-President Richard Nixon, where five men broke into the headquarters of the DNC (Democratic National Committee) at the Watergate building, Washington. The alleged political cover-up attempt led to this scandal. A link between the name of the scandal and the salad was never apparent. However, it is incredibly intriguing. Several food historians like to joke about the fact that the mixture has is covered in whipped cream just like the scandal was covered up. Some say that pistachio was the former President’s most favorite flavor, hence the name. While others claim that it is because this salad was on the menu at the Watergate hotel the afternoon of the event. But no concrete reason has ever been found as to why a salad would have the same name as that of such a famous political scandal.
